Deadly Attack on Mbororo Community in Cameroon’s North West Leaves Survivors Fighting for Their Lives

The aftermath of a brutal attack on the Mbororo community of Gidado Mbandfung in Cameroon’s North West Region is now unfolding in hospital wards, where survivors are battling to recover from severe injuries. Several victims of the January 14 assault are receiving specialized treatment at the Regional Hospital Annex in Nkambe, after emergency teams evacuated them from the remote village in Ndu Subdivision.
The attack has plunged the once-quiet community into grief and fear. Families are mourning loved ones killed in the violence, while others wait anxiously for updates on relatives undergoing treatment far from home. In response to the heightened tension, Cameroonian security forces have reinforced patrols in Gidado Mbandfung and neighboring localities, seeking to restore calm and prevent further attacks in an area already scarred by prolonged insecurity.
At least 14 civilians—among them women, children, and youths—were killed when heavily armed assailants stormed the village, leaving behind scenes of destruction and trauma. Several others sustained serious injuries, and some residents were forced to flee for safety. The scale and brutality of the attack have shocked the region and drawn condemnation beyond the affected community.
Cameroon’s North West Governor, Adolphe Lele L’Afrique, has strongly denounced the assault, describing it as a barbaric act against innocent civilians. He has called on the population to remain vigilant and to work closely with defense and security forces by providing any information that could lead to the identification and arrest of those responsible.
Authorities say security measures will remain in place as investigations continue, while medical teams work to stabilize the wounded. For the survivors and grieving families of Gidado Mbandfung, the focus now is on healing, justice, and the hope of lasting peace in a region struggling to recover from repeated violence.
